The Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC) will be holding their next online meeting on Wednesday, 1st July, and the guest speaker will be Steve Revill from RISC OS Open (ROOL).

Steve will be talking about BBC BASIC, for which he has a soft spot, and providing an overview of its history and its potential future. Steve has recently spent some time working on a C-based re-implementation of the version that comes with RISC OS, which itself was originally developed by Sophie Wilson using hand-crafted ARM assembler. A version written in C will be more maintainable, and more portable to a 64-bit ARM processor if and when RISC OS itself is ever ported to 64-bit.

And speaking of 64-bit, Steve will also discuss where ROOL is currently at with the Moonshot fundraising effort.

Finally, he will look at the updates to LanManFS, which provides a means for RISC OS to communicate with some storage systems over a network. He’ll discuss the motivations behind the recent developments, and the progress made during the software’s alpha testing phase.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 1st July, with a kick off time of 7:45pm. Like all WROCC meetings, it will be held online using the Zoom video conferencing system, allowing you to join from the comfort of your own home.

The only requirements for attendance are a system on which Zoom can be run, and the meeting credentials. These remain the same as previous meetings, so if you’ve attended any recent monthly WROCC meetings you should have them, but if not they can be obtained by contacting the group.

Although the meeting is open to any RISC OS user, regardless of WROCC membership status, it’s well worth supporting the group by joining; the cost is just £10 each year, and you get the group’s self-titled monthly newsletter sent to your inbox as a PDF file, along with access to their online discussion forum.

You can also find recordings of previous meetings on YouTube, linked from the Meetings page on their website.
